The "Project Researching Politically Motivated Violence. Understanding Terrorism and Advocating Democracy with Critical Media Literacy" deals with the social consequences of the discourse on terrorism.
In the last years terrorism has been considered a major threat and challenge to our society and democracy. Terrorist attacks evoke emotions. In order to prevent feelings of fear and threat from turning into hatred among young people, they must learn to understand events within their socio-political range in order to be able to face them in a critically reflective manner. An essential question here is what terrorism and the media discourse on terrorism do to us and democracy in Germany. We deal with these questions with teenagers by using interactive methods.
The results can now be accessed at walter.basa.de and used for educational work in school and extracurricular civic education. The pedagogical manual can be ordered by postal mail or can be downloaded from the project page.
